Dream Catchers
What is a Dreamcatcher?
Dreamcatchers were originally made by Ojibwe people. They are traditionally hung in a bedroom near a window. According to legend, the light helps the dreamcatcher trap bad dreams, which are destroyed by the morning sun.
You'll Need
- Paper plates
- Yarn
- Feathers
- Pony beads
- Markers
- Scissors
- Glue or tape
Instructions
Step 1
Carefully cut out the center, or inner circle, of the paper plate.
Step 2
Poke holes evenly around the inside edge of the paper plate.
Step 3
Poke two holes in the top of the outer edge of the paper plate, roughly two inches apart. This is where the dreamcatcher will be hung.
Step 4
Draw patterns or shapes on the paper plate, or paint it. Use glue or tape to attach decorations such as pom poms, buttons, gemstones, or sequins.
Then cut a 55-inch piece of yarn and tie one end through any of the inner holes, knotting it in place.
Step 5
Thread the yarn through the inner holes in any pattern you like, crossing them to create a web. Add beads as you go.
Step 6
Cut a 6-inch piece of yarn. Feed it through the top two outer holes and tie a knot. This becomes the hanger.
Step 7
Cut three 12-inch strands of yarn. Tie feathers to one end of each (or use glue). Slide beads onto each strand, letting them rest on top of the feathers.
Step 8
Tie the other end of each decorated strand to the bottom three holes of the plate.
