Five years ago, Anannya moved to Canada as an international student, holding onto a simple promise she made to herself: once she was settled, she would find a way to give back. That moment came when she started her first full-time job and became a Big Sister with Big Brothers Big Sisters.
Now working as a Senior Insurance Advisor in Vancouver, Anannya reflects on how mentorship has helped her build a sense of belonging in a new country. “Even though this isn’t the community that raised me, I wanted to give back in a meaningful way,” she says.
Her match with her Little quickly blossomed into a relationship full of creativity and connection. From trampoline parks and treetop walks to escape rooms and painting sessions, they’ve shared countless joyful adventures. Even after moving to another province, Anannya has stayed a consistent and positive presence through virtual visits.
One of her favourite memories is from a summer afternoon spent at a blueberry farm. “She was so patient, carefully picking the best berries,” Anannya recalls. “It reminded me to slow down and appreciate the little things.”
Over time, their connection has deepened. “At first, I had to ask a lot of questions to get her to open up. But now, she shares stories from her day freely, even over video. We’ve found ways to keep the fun and connection alive.”
Anannya is quick to say that every volunteer deserves recognition, but her steady, thoughtful presence speaks volumes. “I believe in showing up with care and consistency. That’s where the impact is.”
