Building Confidence, One Goal at a Time

Ryan, a Medical Sciences student at Western University, is originally from Calgary and brings a thoughtful, active approach to mentorship. When he’s not studying, you can find him on the basketball court, reading a good book, or spending quality time with his Little—usually doing something active and fun.

He decided to volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters because he wanted to give back in the same way that others had supported him growing up. “I had people in my life who encouraged me and helped shape who I am today,” he shared. “I wanted to be that person for someone else.”

Ryan’s Little enjoys that he’s always game for anything—soccer, trying something new, or just hanging out and chatting. He keeps things light and fun while also creating space for deeper conversations. “I try to match their energy so they always feel comfortable being themselves. And I always make sure they know their thoughts and opinions matter.”

One of Ryan’s most memorable moments came after a long soccer game, when he and his mentee sat down to rest. What started as a casual break turned into a meaningful chat about goals in both soccer and life. “It showed me how much our time together goes beyond just playing sports. Seeing their confidence grow and knowing they feel comfortable sharing with me—that’s been the most rewarding part.”

Ryan’s humble about receiving this recognition. “I don’t necessarily think of it as deserving the award, but I do try to be a consistent and positive presence. I’m just grateful to be part of a program that makes such a meaningful impact.”
