A dedicated mentor, Melanie brings compassion, laughter, and life experience into her match with Maya. Born in Scotland and raised in Canada, Melanie has spent her life in the caring profession as a Registered Nurse and now works as an inspector for the Ministry of Long-Term Care. She’s been married for 30 years, is the proud mom of two adult children, and a dog mom to two pups. Her nurturing spirit and love for connection naturally extend into her role as a mentor.
Melanie’s decision to become a Big was deeply personal—she had a mentor through Big Brothers Big Sisters when she was younger and knows firsthand the impact that kind of steady support can have. “I wanted to be someone who could help a young girl feel seen, valued, and capable of achieving anything she sets her mind to,” she says. “Mentoring isn’t just about giving back—it’s about planting seeds of confidence, kindness, and possibility.”
The connection between Melanie and Maya was immediate. With similar personalities and a shared sense of humour, they’ve created a bond that’s both strong and joyful. Whether it’s a reassuring word or a perfectly timed laugh, Maya treasures Melanie’s presence—and the feeling is mutual.
Their time together has been filled with memorable moments. Melanie fondly recalls the day they jumped on a trampoline together. “It was terrifying at first—my screams made her laugh even harder—but we couldn’t stop laughing every time I bounced too high or lost my balance,” she remembers. Another favourite moment was a visit to Port Stanley, complete with blueberry pancakes by the lake and a beach walk collecting rocks and shells. “She called it Port Stanley Ocean, and I will too from now on,” Melanie says with a smile.
Their connection even transcends generations. “She thought she was introducing me to Cyndi Lauper,” Melanie laughs, “but ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun’ came out when I was her age!” Despite a 42-year age gap, their relationship is proof that meaningful mentorship has no age limit.
Melanie is quick to say she doesn’t feel like she deserves this award—“Anyone who takes the time to mentor a child deserves this recognition just as much.” But we’re proud to honour her for the joy, commitment, and guidance she brings to her match. Melanie continues to show up with heart, building a friendship that makes a lasting impact.
