Making Time for Mentorship

For Dave, mentoring young people has been one of the most rewarding parts of a career that has taken him across Canada.

Originally from Winnipeg, Dave began his career in the radio industry in Estevan, Saskatchewan, in the early 1980s. From there, his career took him to Brandon, Victoria, Toronto, and eventually London. Today, he remains involved in the industry through part-time talent development and executive coaching.

Outside of work, Dave and his wife, Alison, have been married for almost 30 years and have a 26-year-old son, Jackson, and a dog named Aussie. Now living in North London, they enjoy travelling, reading, gardening, walking the dog, and spending time with friends. Dave is also a dedicated sports fan who can often be found cheering on the Blue Jays and Buffalo Bills.

Throughout his career, Dave always enjoyed opportunities to mentor young people. He was also familiar with Big Brothers Big Sisters through sponsoring events and fundraising activities and had seen the important role the organization plays in young people’s lives. When his career began to slow down and he heard about the long wait for boys hoping to be matched with a mentor in London, the timing felt right.

“I thought NOW was the time,” Dave shares.

Since becoming a Big, Dave and his Little have built their connection through plenty of active adventures. Fishing, swimming, hiking, and trips to the park are among their favourite ways to spend time together. When asked what his Little might appreciate most about him, Dave remembers something his Little once told his mom: that Dave is “a very nice and kind person.”

Their time together has already created some memorable stories. At a BBBS sports day at Canada Life Place this summer, Dave had the opportunity to see his Little’s competitive and athletic side come to life as he took on the different games and activities. Dave jokes that we should watch for him in the Olympics one day.

Another surprise came during their first trip to the pool. His Little told Dave that he didn’t know how to swim, only to immediately impress him with an amazing front flip into the water.

For Dave, being named Big of the Month is a meaningful acknowledgement of the time mentors dedicate to building relationships with young people. After years of mentoring others throughout his professional life, becoming a Big has given him another opportunity to share his time, encouragement, and kindness with the next generation.

We’re proud to recognize Dave as our October Big of the Month and celebrate the enthusiasm, care, and commitment he brings to his match.
