Josh knows firsthand the difference a mentor can make in a young person’s life. Growing up, he was matched with a Big Brother through Big Brothers Big Sisters, an experience that left a lasting impression and ultimately inspired him to become a mentor himself.
Today, Josh works as a community mental health nurse, spending much of his day traveling throughout the city to support clients. Outside of work, he enjoys cooking and often spends his free time preparing meals and trying new recipes.
When asked why he decided to volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Josh points to his own experience in the program. “My Big Brother did wonders for me,” he shares. Having benefited from the support and guidance of a mentor, he wanted to provide the same opportunity for another young person.
Over the years, Josh and his Little have built a strong connection based on trust, consistency, and shared experiences. When asked what his Little likes most about him, Josh recalls a simple but meaningful answer his Little once gave the agency: “He’s nice to me.” While brief, those four words perfectly capture the caring and supportive relationship they have built together.
One of Josh’s favourite memories involves working on a project together. He was impressed when his Little successfully figured out how to attach a specific piece to a tool they were using. “It would have taken me much longer to figure it out on my own,” Josh laughs. Seeing his Little learn new skills and gain confidence has been one of the most rewarding parts of being a mentor.
Their time together is also filled with plenty of fun and laughter. One thing that has remained constant since the beginning of their match is his Little’s love of singing. Whether they’re in the car or walking through a building, Josh says his Little is never shy about singing along to whatever song is playing.
Although Josh feels many mentors are deserving of recognition, he is grateful to be selected as Big of the Month. For him, mentorship is about showing up, being present, and making sure his Little knows he always has someone in his corner.
Through his dedication, kindness, and consistency, Josh continues to make a meaningful difference. We are proud to celebrate him as our June Big of the Month.
